Privacy Policy
Effective date: September 21, 2026
This Privacy Policy explains what information JupyterDocs collects, how we use it, and the choices you have. It applies to jupyterdocs.com and the installable app version of the Service.
1. Information we collect
Account information. When you register, we collect your name, email address, and a securely hashed password. If you sign in with Google instead, we receive your name, email, and Google account ID.
Upload information. When you upload a resource, we store the file itself, its title, description, and course/university if you provide them. If you upload without an account, we also store the name — and, if given, email — you enter as the uploader.
Usage and activity data. We track when you're active on the Service (last-seen time and rough daily active time) to keep the platform running and for internal analytics. We also record which resources you've downloaded, saved, voted on, or reported, tied to your account.
Session data. Like most websites, we keep a session for you while logged in, which includes your IP address and browser/device information, used for security and to keep you signed in.
Local storage. We store a small amount of data in your browser: your light/dark theme preference, and a flag that stops our install splash screen from showing on every visit. Neither is sent to us or used for tracking.
Files sent for preview conversion. If you upload a PowerPoint, Word, or Excel file, we send a copy to a document-conversion service (see Section 3) to generate a page-by-page PDF preview. The converted PDF is then stored and served like any other file on the Service.
We don't currently run advertising and don't collect data for ad-targeting.
2. How we use your information
We use the information above to:
- Operate the Service — let you upload, browse, search, save, and download resources.
- Moderate content before it's published.
- Track your download credit balance — the free download every account starts with, plus what you earn by uploading.
- Show you related documents and, for admins, usage statistics.
- Send account-related email: verification, password resets, and notifications about your uploads.
- Keep the Service secure and prevent abuse.
3. Who we share information with
We share information with the following providers, only as needed to run JupyterDocs:
- Cloudflare R2 — stores uploaded files and thumbnail images.
- CloudConvert, and as a backup our own self-hosted conversion servers — receive files temporarily to convert them to PDF for the in-browser preview.
- Google — if you sign in with Google, for authentication only.
- Our email provider — sends verification, password-reset, and notification email on our behalf.
We don't sell your personal information, and we don't share it with third parties for their own marketing.
4. Data retention and deletion
If you delete your account:
- Your saved resources, votes, and reports are permanently deleted.
- Resources you uploaded remain on JupyterDocs, since it's a shared academic archive — deleting your account doesn't delete content you contributed — but they're no longer linked to your identity and display as uploaded by "Anonymous."
- We otherwise keep account and usage data for as long as your account is active, plus a reasonable period afterward for security, legal, and moderation purposes.
5. Your rights
Depending on where you're located, you may have rights to access, correct, or delete your personal information, or to object to certain processing. You can update most information from your profile page, or delete your account entirely. For anything else, contact us via our Contact page.
6. Children's privacy
JupyterDocs is intended for university students and isn't directed at children under 13 (or the relevant age of digital consent where you live). We don't knowingly collect information from children.
7. Security
We use industry-standard measures to protect your information, including encrypted password storage and HTTPS. No system is perfectly secure, so we can't guarantee absolute protection.
8. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected in the effective date above.
